Notes for legal review

Open questions and drafting assumptions in this document. These notes are removed when the document goes into force.

  • DRAFT for review. Deliberately claims a TARGET rather than conformance, and lists real known gaps. An unqualified "WCAG 2.2 AA conformant" claim without an audit is a misrepresentation, and accessibility claims attract complaints and litigation in the US.
  • The known-gaps list is honest as of the revision date and should be updated as items are fixed, not left to go stale — a statement listing gaps that were fixed months ago is nearly as bad as one claiming conformance.
  • The focus-indicator contrast fix is stated as done because it was measured and remediated (the previous indicator failed at 2.51:1 against the light background; the replacement measures 5.84:1). It is the one concrete remediation this page can point to.
  • No VPAT or Accessibility Conformance Report exists. Confirm whether one is needed for the intended market — some public-sector and school-adjacent buyers require it.

1. Our aim

We want Catomni Studio to be usable by everyone who needs it, including people who use screen readers, navigate by keyboard, rely on magnification, or need higher contrast. Studios serve families of every kind, and a parent should not be shut out of their child's schedule by our interface.

2. The standard we work to

We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA.

We describe this as a target, not an achievement. Catomni has not been through an independent accessibility audit, and we do not claim full conformance. Below is what we know about where we stand.

3. What we have done

  • Light, dark and system-following appearance modes, so the interface can follow whichever your device is set to.
  • Colour contrast reviewed against the AA thresholds. Our focus indicator previously failed the 3:1 non-text contrast requirement against the light background, measuring 2.51:1; it was replaced with one measuring 5.84:1.
  • Semantic HTML for headings, lists, tables and forms, so assistive technology can convey structure.
  • Form fields with associated labels, and validation errors presented as text rather than by colour alone.
  • Data tables with proper header cells, and wide tables that scroll within their own region rather than forcing the whole page sideways.
  • Responsive layouts that reflow rather than requiring horizontal scrolling.

4. Known gaps

Being specific here is more useful to you than a general disclaimer:

  • No independent audit has been carried out, so there will be issues we have not found.
  • Keyboard navigation has not been verified end to end across every screen. Complex interactive areas — the scheduling views, the messaging composer and some dialogs — are the most likely to have problems.
  • Screen reader testing has been informal rather than systematic, and has not covered every combination of screen reader and browser.
  • Dynamic updates are not consistently announced to assistive technology; some changes may happen silently.
  • Exported spreadsheets and CSV files are plain data exports and are not structured for accessibility.
  • Charts and reporting visuals may not have full text equivalents.
  • Uploaded images, including student photographs, rely on whoever uploaded them for meaningful alternative text.
  • No VPAT or Accessibility Conformance Report is available.

5. Telling us about a problem

If something stops you using Catomni, we would like to know — reports of real barriers are more useful to us than any checklist. We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within [TO BE CONFIRMED: accessibility response target] and will tell you what we intend to do. If we cannot fix something quickly, we will look for another way to get you what you need in the meantime — including a member of our team or your studio doing it for you.

6. Studios: your part

  • Write meaningful descriptions for images you upload, so they mean something to someone who cannot see them.
  • Do not rely on colour alone to carry information in announcements and messages.
  • Keep announcements in plain language, and offer another way to reach you for families who need one.
